Chinese Government Condemns United States of ‘Hypocritical Policies’ Over Trade Levy Warning

The former US president’s latest warning to impose an additional full import duty on items imported from China has been labeled a “classic case” of United States’ contradictory behavior, as stated by the Chinese government.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry further commented that China could implement its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the US President executes his warning, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a potential trade war.

This past Friday, the former president retaliated at the Chinese government’s action to tighten its regulations for overseas sales of critical elements, alleging the Chinese leadership of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the global community “hostage”.

Furthermore, he warned to pull out of a planned meeting with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a summit in the Republic of Korea in the coming weeks.

Trump’s comments on that day rattled financial markets, with the S&P 500 closing down nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since last spring.

These statements revived concerns of a commercial dispute between the two economic giants.

In May, the two sides had consented to remove triple-digit tariffs on each other’s goods, which had created the possibility of commerce ceasing between the economic powers.

As a result, US tariffs on Chinese imports incurring an added thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market face a import levy.

Beijing’s recent statements – issued by the relevant government department in the manner of written responses to press queries – reflected rhetoric from the height of the recent trade conflict.

The remarks condemned United States controls on electronic components while supporting Beijing’s export controls on key elements as “normal actions” to safeguard domestic safety and that of the global community.

Their representative stated that for “an extended period”, the US had “overstretched the concept of state security, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “implemented” unfair treatments against Beijing.

“Turning to” tariff threats is not the right way to engage with Beijing,” the spokesperson stated.

“China’s position on a tariff war has consistently been unchanging: we wish to avoid one, but we are not afraid of one.”

Last week, the Chinese government announced it was reinforcing export controls on rare earth minerals and other materials vital for cutting-edge industry.

This move was regarded as a significant step, as the country processes about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are used in items such as renewable energy components and handheld devices.

Latest statements from both governments are being viewed by some as a method of bolstering negotiating stances ahead of forthcoming discussions.
